onOne's new Perfect Layers is the perfect companion to Lightroom and Aperture! While offering many options for cataloging, managing and performing adjustments on your image library, neither of these applications lets you perform layer-based edits such as blending of multiple images into one while maintaining full edibility of each separate image layer's attributes (such as position, blending mode, opacity, stacking order, etc.).

In response to this obvious need, onOne has distilled the essence of Photoshop layer editing and management into Perfect Layers for a fraction of the cost. In fact, Perfect Layers is free for existing customers of the onOne Plug-in Suite and can be purchased separately as well.

Perfect Layers is designed especially for users who don't own an expensive external layer-based imaging editor such as Photoshop (or don't wish to climb the steep learning curve such advanced editors require). Perfect Layers is easily mastered.

In my examples at left I show how to blend three different images into one using Perfect Layers' masking features, in this case working off a "flying" theme.

My base image (top) is of a plane fuselage against a plain blue sky that just begs for clouds. I imported one of my cloud stock photos (center) and used the MaskingBug Tool on its layer to reveal the plane while maintaining most of the clouds. I then performed some minor touchup to the mask in the plane area by using the Masking Brush Tool to remove any stray clouds.

The next screenshot shows an additional cloud layer placed in the stack between the others. The Transform tool allowed me to move this layer's bottom edge flush with the top of the plane and rotate it slightly to match. Further editing with the Masking Brush on this layer blended the orange clouds in with the white ones. The final result is shown at bottom, saved as a layered .PSD file which supports additional editing if desired.

onOne Software's Perfect Layers is the fast and easy way to create layered files in Photoshop Lightroom. With Perfect Layers you can create and edit multi-layered Photoshop files directly within Photoshop Lightroom or use it to combine images from within other applications. Use it to change skies, composite multiple images together and retouch portraits using the built-in blend modes. If you have used Photoshop before you understand the benefits and capabilities that layers bring to your workflow.

If you're not a heavy duty Photoshop user, Perfect Layers is the simple yet powerful way to experience the creative possibilities layers offer. For example you could take two exposures of the same scene and merge them into one file with the correct overall exposure.

You could also take two images of the same family portrait setting and merge them to a single file so you can take the best smiles from the two images. You could even combine multiple images to create a montage or album page layout.

With Perfect Layers you can control how much of each layer is visible by using the familiar Masking Brush from PhotoTools 2.6. Similar to using a layer mask, you can paint with the onOne Masking Brush to reveal or hide areas of a layer. The masking brush is non-destructive and can even be re-edited with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Perfect Layers contains all the controls you need to size and align your layers. Using simple tools you can easily change the order of layers, adjust their size and rotation, even change their blending mode and opacity. By changing blending modes you can quickly and dramatically alter the appearance of your image. You can use blending modes to change brightness, alter color and create special effects. All the adjustments you make can be readjusted easily and are non-destructive.

The files that are created by Perfect Layers are non-destructive and can even be opened and edited by Photoshop and Photoshop Elements later if desired.
