CCThis image was created entirely in Canvas 6, from the original scans to the filters, text and masking effects.
CCThis CD cover consists of a scan from a Yamaha 4-track cassette deck brochure (background), which was filtered, then overlaid with a scan of a microphone from a music catalog (lassoed, copied, pasted, pasted again, flipped). I added text, and an image of myself which was masked with the Rectangular Transparency Tool.
CCBeing a photographer for almost 25 years, I approach graphics software from an imaging standpoint as opposed to illustration. So I appreciate Canvas' ability to handle images while supporting the easy addition of text and vector effects when desired.
CCI help teach the popular graphics applications at Cal State University, so I get to deal with Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark on a daily basis. It often strikes me how much simpler it would be for the students to do their various projects in one application such as Canvas instead of banging back and forth. In fact, I tell people about Canvas every chance I get! Our department chair, who teaches a Graphics Comm class and lab, is familiar with Canvas and is willing to introduce it to our computer lab on a limited basis next semester. Our only difficulty is making sure students are familiar with the other industry standard apps for the sake of their employability; otherwise, I think we'd be better off using Canvas exclusively.
CC In the meantime, I keep trying to teach myself to make Canvas perform the tasks commonly accomplished in the above-mentioned applications. I'm proud to say that I invested in Canvas back in 1996, even before I owned a computer, because I was awed by its integrated capabilities. I use the other apps when necessary here on campus, but have only purchased Canvas for my personal use. (Every time Adobe, et al introduce another upgrade for another bunch of bucks, I smile to myself when I think of how little Canvas cost me over the years!)
CCI'm very excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for Canvas--after all, its capabilities are very close to that of the major players (and in some cases exceed them), and it would only take the addition of a few new and/or industry standard features to eliminate the need for the competition altogether.
