Composite images made with the help of Fluid Mask. See original(s) below each composite
Vertus has created a new generation professional cut-out tool called Fluid Mask, more powerful than anything currently available. Fluid Mask is a highly advanced software tool designed to make life easier for everyone who creates cut-outs. Built as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop, Fluid Mask is the first next-generation cut-out tool.

Behind the product is breakthrough technology that mimics the way the eye, optic-nerve and brain perform visual processing. It offers an intuitive, accurate and fast approach to cut outs. In using Fluid Mask you apply selections to a meta-data layer of image information called the Image Information Layer (IIL). This is made up of boundary, texture and colour information pulled from your image.

* Fluid Mask differentiates between hard and soft edges
* The edges and color transitions are separated smoothly
* Blending and masking are co-synchronous, so are more efficient with no extra work
* There is less data to work on so the process is speedier– large images are no problem
* You can adjust IIL resolution to work on hard to gauge edges
* Fluid Mask has real time image derived color pallets for colour based mask selections
* You can easily review work in progress
* You can fine tune mask selections at pixel level for maximum control
* Fluid Mask preserves maximum detail at the blended transitions.

SPEED – the work is done quickly.

OPPORTUNITY – you can work with images that you would have not been able to complete before.

DETAIL – Fluid Mask preserves the all-important edge information for a professional quality cut out.

TRIED AND TESTED
When tested against most other cut-out methodologies, using a selection of images, Fluid Mask proved to be 50% faster when dealing with the same simple images, consisting of sharp edges and contrasting backgrounds

On hard images involving defocused edges/hair but contrasting backgrounds, Fluid Mask was approx 3 times faster. On hard images with easy edges but similar foregrounds and backgrounds Fluid Mask was 4 times faster. On hard images involving hair/defocused edges and similar foregrounds and backgrounds, Fluid Mask was 6 times faster

The conclusion can only be that across a wide range of use cases Fluid Mask was at least 3 times faster than alternative methodologies.

It was also found that the Fluid Mask software pays for itself in one job if the task is to cut out complex lattices such as bicycles, vegetation, hair, fur etc.

A key feature of version 2 is the new Edge Overlay showing object edges within an image. Suddenly masking becomes a whole lot easier. It's now possible to select, group and mask objects in images to make great cut outs.

Key features of Fluid Mask's approach are:
Identify edges before you begin masking using the Edge Overlay view
•"Click-and-cut". Easily select objects for quick masking
•Find hard to see edges using the intuitive Edge Detection options
•Fine tune mask selections at the pixel level using color palettes
•Work in progress is easy to review
•Masking and blending are co-synchronous–no double work is necessary
•Automatically differentiates between hard and soft edges in the blend

Fluid Mask 2.0 New Features
Using the latest algorithms in Fluid Mask 2.0, for the first time in digital imaging you can see clean object edges within an image. Suddenly masking has become a whole lot easier. It's now possible to select, group and mask objects in images to make great cut-outs.

Edge Overlay
Use the Edge Overlay view to see all the object edges in the Workspace before you begin cutting. If you can see the edge to be cut as an object, you can cut it. By selecting and grouping objects using the Local mask brushes you create the area to be cut.

Edge Detection Option panel
The position and number of objects/edges in the Workspace may be adjusted using the Edge Detection Options panel. This replaces the Image Information Layer in the first version. The panel is easy to pick up and intuitive to use–watch adjustments as they are instantly reflected in the Edge Overlay view.

Local and Global Brush Strength Slider
We've added brush strength sliders to the Local and Global brushes. A weak Global brush will filter for areas of similar color and texture whereas a strong one will filter for color only. For example, a weak selection could be used to select areas of grass only but not select other similar greens in the image.

The Local brush strength slider will group objects of similar color when set to strong. This is very useful for masking complex areas with small objects such as hair.
